Cute can sometimes come at a price. Sometimes the best looking shoes aren’t the most functional and most people aren’t aware that wearing the wrong shoes can actually cause long term effects. The most natural thing for our feet is to be barefoot walking along natural terrain such as grass, sand, dirt, etc. The order in which our feet should move against the floor is: your heel strikes the floor and the roll between the heel and the toes soften the impact. Unfortunately, certain shoes can restrict our movement, push our feet in unnatural positions, and cause constant strain on feet. Some of these include: Flat Shoes: Flats are popular and considered comfortable, however, the sole of the flat is typically not very flexible and has little to no heel support. Meaning the shock of walking goes straight into the heel then straight into the toe. Lastly, the toe box is narrow, so what happens is the toes get crushed and may even cause nerve damage over time. Winter Boots: Now is the season where most people are wearing winter boots and although comfortable, warm and cozy, there are a few reasons to be cautious of the winter boot you select. The first thing is that some do not provide proper ankle support. The second is that there is so much space in the boot, that the foot tends to slide around in the boot, which causes you to grip the bottom of the boot which overuses the toe flexors and curves toes. Formal Winter Boot: Opposite to the winter boot, this boot restricts your ankle movement, which restricts your extension and thus your glute activation. Because most formal boots are not breathable, this can cause compression as your feet try to swell and expand. Heels: While very stylish and popular, heels can do major long term damage to your feet. Your feet can become stuck in the curled position, and the arch on your foot can become extra elongated. Lastly, the calves become stuck contracted which makes the calves look constantly “flexed”.
