Magnetostrictive level sensors are superior to guided wave radar (GWR) technology when to comes to accuracy and resolution. The FLM-H magnetostrictive level sensor has extremely narrow dead zones at the top and bottom, and a high enough resolution that it can detect the thickness of a business card. For pharmaceutical and food & beverage applications, which type of level instrument is better: one with guided wave radar (GWR) technology or a magnetostrictive float level? Guided Wave Radar vs. Magnetostrictive Technology A GWR sensor typically reads values once every 3 seconds and are accurate within 0.2–0.4 inches (5–10 mm). These limitations are fine for most applications. However, for small runs or extremely expensive batches, which are common in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, those parameters aren’t good enough. On the other hand, a magnetostrictive float level instrument like WIKA’s FLM-H level transmitter reads values once every 1 second – three times more than GWR sensors – and can measure up to 0.004 of an inch (0.1 mm.) Such accuracy means also smaller dead zones both at the top and at the bottom of the tank, thereby maximizing the efficiency of batch processing.
