About the Long Life empowerment H.H. the Sakya Trichen advised: "If we have the highest motivation to benefit all sentient beings and help them to reach enlightenment, then practice of the Long Life Dharani and the Long Life prayer [from the lineage of mahasiddha Tangtong Gyalpo] can bestow ordinary and supreme siddhis. Ordinary siddhis increase our life-span and remove obstacles. Supreme siddhis give us progress on the Mahayana path to enlightenment.” Long Life Prayer from the lineage of Mahasiddha Tangtong Gyalpo: Hri Hri Hri Amitabha, who caringly guards all beings, Amitayus, who bestows immortality to living beings, Hayagriva, the king of power, who dispels the hindrance to beings, Padmasambhava, the saviour of beings in the degenerate age, Tangtong Gyalpo who answers prayers unfailingly, I pray to you to dispel negative circumstances and obstacles Please bestow blessings and the attainment of immortality. Long Life dharani: Om Amarani Jiwanti Guru Padma Krodha Punye Jñana Ayur Siddhi Hri Hri Hri Benefit from practicing any of the 21 Taras: Receiving the empowerments of and becoming engaged in practicing any of the Taras from the tradition of 21 Taras of Indian mahasiddha Suryagupta (if done with proper bodhichitta motivation, good concentration as well as keeping the all the three sets of Buddhist vows) can bring great blessings from the transmission lineage and lead to acquiring ordinary and supreme attainments (Sanskrit: siddhis). Ordinary (also called common) siddhis are those which bring benefits in this life. Supreme (or uncommon) siddhis are those which enable us to gain realisation of the profound view and help us towards reaching full enlightenment. About Tara and Suryagupta’s lineage: Tara is the female Buddha of enlightened action. Suryagupta was a lay practitioner from Kashmir who lived in the 8th century. He became one of the 84 Buddhist Mahasiddhas – those revered yogis who attained great realizations (siddhis) within their lifetime due to a Vajrayana sadhana practice. Tara herself bestowed on Suryagupta with her practices and praises and he founded a number of lineages including the tradition of practicing the 21 Taras. Tara has twenty-one primary emanations, each possessing different qualities and activities. Each Tara form is compassionately aiding sentient beings to overcome suffering, enjoy positive outer circumstances and progress on the spiritual path toward the enlightenment. Power Granting Tara She is a 4-armed Yellow Tara, 8th Tara from 21 Taras, Sanskrit name: Vashitottama da Tara. She gives strength, authority, and confidence. She protects from persecution and conflict, removes stubborn obstacles, and brings progress in dharma. Boon Granting Tara She is a 4-armed Red Tara, 9th Tara from 21 Taras, Sanskrit name: Vara da Tara. She bestows protection, refuge, and success, purifies emotional afflictions. She protects from fear and misuse of power. Samaya/commitment: In order to receive any Sakya empowerment as it was advised by His Holiness the Sakya Trichen to Sakya Friends, it is necessary to generate bodhichitta, take or strengthen Buddhist Refuge (with all or any of the 5 lay vows), take and keep other Buddhist vows including 18 root and 46 secondary bodhisattva vows. In case of Long Life empowerment and any Tara empowerments from Suryagupta’s tradition, since these empowerments and practices belong to the highest tantra, one must also take/renew and keep the 14 root Vajrayana vows. All vows and commitments are taken at the start of the empowerment when we repeat the Seven-Limb prayer after the Vajra master. If one can’t take all the three sets of Buddhist vows, empowerment can be received not as a proper Vajrayana empowerment, but as a blessing (which doesn’t give a number of benefits such as authorization into the related Vajrayana sadhana practice).
