02.28.2026 | 2:03 AM | NEWPORT BEACH - One person was killed and another was injured following a suspected DUI crash on the Balboa Peninsula, early Saturday morning. The deadly collision was reported in the 2300 block of Newport Boulevard, near 24th Street, around 2:03 AM when witnesses say a white Chevrolet Corvette was speeding northbound and lost control. The Corvette struck one pedestrian, an adult male, who died at the scene. His identity was not made available by police but a GoFundMe page identified him as 21-year-old Steven Alcaraz. Alcaraz was celebrating his birthday, the GoFundMe page indicates. A second victim, believed to be a passenger in the Corvette, was also injured and rushed to a nearby hospital in unknown condition. Police initially reported the second victim was a pedestrian but later suggested they were a passenger in the Corvette. The passenger, identified as 26-year-old Ashley Guerrero, of Adelanto, was later charged with disorderly conduct, police said. The driver of the Corvette fled from the scene on foot before being apprehended. He was identified as 26-year-old Jesus Alvarez, of Adelanto, according to law enforcement. Police say Alvarez was arrested on charges of driving under the influence but did not mention whether he might face hit-and-run or more serious charges like murder or manslaughter. All north and southbound lanes of Newport Boulevard were closed between 26th and 22nd streets while police investigated the deadly collision. The road was later reopened around 12:15 PM.
