Courage by the Tragically Hip! So excellent. Does it get any better than this? I don't think so. I think this is one of the greatest Rockin' Pop songs ever written in Canada. Courage was released in February 1993, as the third single from their 1992 album, Fully Completely. I love that record from cover to cover. This tune was nominated for Single of the Year at the 1994 Juno Awards. According to Wikipedia, between 1995 and 2016, Courage was the most played Tragically Hip song on Rock radio stations in Canada. Totally understandable, as it's got everything this band ever did as a group. A fine Vocal from Gord Downie. A wicked Bass part from Gord Sinclair (I'd say he's their secret weapon). Great, solid Drums from Johnny Fay. A classic weird Guitar solo from Rob Baker. And a fine Rhythm Guitar part from the criminally underappreciated Paul Langlois. Rhythm Guitarists are often overlooked regarding their contribution, and Paul is no exception. But without him, the Hip don't groove anywhere as well as they should. So there. These videos serve as lessons on how I play this bunch of Pop, Rock, and Reggae songs - sometimes as a single guitarist playing the only guitar part, though that's rare. And sometimes if there is more than one guitar part, then trying to find the single good path through the tune. I complete one pass, demonstrating different Rhythm parts, styles, and techniques. There is no talking. No discussion. No note-for-note explanations. As such, for clarity, my guitar is supposed to be louder in the mix than it would ever be in a live setting. But, if you really want to hear what I hear, do what I do and put on a good pair headphones with great bass response! It's worth it. Why this is important to Rhythm Guitar: Now, I've made a LOT of videos in which I play the Lead Guitar part. But, this one I've held to strictly the Rhythm. I did learn the solo, but overlaying precisely what Rob Baker played is essentially impossible. So, why do that? He's such a weird player. I bet he'd be the first to tell you! Anyway, the Rhythm part. This song lets me present to you places where you can let chords ring out. This is because I'm playing here like there is another Guitarist. Sometimes you can let a chord ring over verses to choruses, and choruses to bridges, and bridges to verses! This is a song like that. What I am playing here though is one part of a two Guitar song. It's a dream to play with another Guitarist who also underplays. If you can find that, this is the kind of Guitar you'd get to play... #echohead #rhythmguitar #powerpop #tragicallyhipcourageguitar
