The Ayyappa cult is a fascinating blend of fact and fiction and nowhere is it manifested in more magical ways than at Erumeli, a small town on the way to Sabarimala. A Vellala family, which had migrated from Tamil Nadu centuries ago, still preserves a small mud hut called 'Puthenveedu' where 15-year-old Ayyappa is said to have stayed the night he slayed Mahishi. The hut is said to be nearly 1000 years old. A basket-hilted sword that Ayyappa is believed to have used to kill Mahishi is placed inside a small puja room of the low-ceilinged hut. A similar sword can also be found in the ancestral house of Ayyappa's 'kalari' guru, Poonkudi's house, in Cheerapanchira, Alappuzha. It is said to have been left there when Ayyappa went to seek his Guru's blessings before starting out on his mission to destroy the cruel Udayanan. Those in Erumeli will also take you to the pond, Rudirakulam or 'blood pond', where Ayyappa had washed the sword of Mahishi's blood. The pilgrims on their sojourn to Sabarimala worship at Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, in Erumeli, Kottayam District, Kerala and conduct “Petta Thullal”. There are two temples in Erumely town. This temple is known as Valiyambalam and the other one is Kochambalam. Both the temples are situated within 0.5 km. The famous Erumely Pettathullal during Sabarimala pilgrimage is performed near the Valiyambalam and Kochambalam. There is also an ancient mosque dedicated to Vavar who is considered to be the friend of Lord Ayyappa. Pilgrims have the necessary facilities like accommodation, food and water at this temple, provided by Travancore Devaswom Board. ‘Thazhmon Mutt’ holds the tantric rights of the temple. Naga Prathista are also seen in the temple. Erumely is the name extracted from Erumakolli (“killed the buffalo”). A myth tells that Lord Ayyappa killed “Mahishi”, sister of Mahishasura who was killed by goddess Durga, in this place on the way to collect a tiger’s milk. Mahishi to take revenge had prayed to Lord Brahma and got a boon that she shall be killed only by the son of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Mahish means buffalo and “Eruma” in Malayalam and hence the name extract “erumakolli” and later as “Erumeli”. Leela who was the daughter of Galavamuni, under curse of her husband Dathan, was reborn as Mahishi. She was an “asura’ female with a buffalo’s face. Upon having killed by Lord Ayyappa, the curse was revoked and the beautiful woman rose out of the corpse. She thanked the Lord and prayed to be with him as his wife. Pettathulal, also known as Petta Kettu, is a historic ritualistic dance held annually on the 27th of Dhanu at Erumely, in the district of Kottayam, in the Indian state of Kerala. It is performed during the Mandalam - Makaravilakku period (November, December and January) among thousands of devotees. It depicts the joyfulness of people over the slaying of Mahishi by Lord Ayyappa Special thanks to Megastar Mammootty Team Malikappuram Movie • History Of Malikappuram | Vishnu Sasi Shan... camera : GoPro Hero 9 ====== Follow me====== Our New Channel : / @viswayathra4923 Facebook ; https://fb.me/SahayathrikanDeepu Instagram; https://instagram.com/sahayathrikanvl... contact : 8848046127 ANTI-PIRACY WARNING : This content is copyrighted to Sahayathrikan .
