At the iconic Yujun Bridge, nestled in the heart of Shaxi Ancient Town in Jianchuan, Yunnan China, we paused to take in the tranquil scene. Framed by old willow trees and ancient stonework, the bridge inspired a few local artists who sat nearby, capturing its beauty on canvas — a quiet reflection of Shaxi’s timeless charm. Once a thriving stop along the ancient Tea Horse Road, Shaxi was a vital trading hub where horses, tea, and culture crossed paths. Today, it stands as one of the best-preserved ancient market towns in China, quietly holding on to its past. As we wandered along its cobbled lanes, time seems to slow down. Traditional Bai architecture, wooden windows and doorways invite us to imagine life centuries ago. There is no rush here — just the gentle rhythm of everyday life in Shaxi. In the town’s historic core, the old theatre stage still stands in Sideng Square. It faces the Xingjiao Temple, a reminder of Shaxi’s cultural and spiritual heritage. We visited YouFeng Xiaoguan, one of the filming locations for the Chinese drama “Meet Yourself”. This charming courtyard teahouse is as inviting in real life as it is on screen. We enjoyed a light meal here, soaking in the tranquil ambience and warm hospitality. Unlike the busier tourist towns, Shaxi offers something rare — authenticity. It is a place to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with a simpler way of life.
