Bridget Riley: Learning to See presents a major exhibition by one of Britain’s most influential artists. Bringing together works from across Riley’s career, the exhibition focuses on the act of looking, offering insight into how her contemporary art paintings and drawings are made. The exhibition title chosen by Riley comes from one of Claude Monet’s letters to fellow artist Eugène Boudin, written late in life, thanking Boudin for being the first to teach him ‘to see and understand’. Spanning several decades of practice, Learning to See foregrounds Riley’s distinctive visual language rooted in colour, form and rhythm, subjects inspired by her experience of living on the Cornish coast as a child. The exhibition includes drawings, revealing how careful observation and experimentation underpin her paintings. The exhibition invites audiences to slow down and engage more deeply with her paintings, and affirms Riley’s observation that nature is not merely landscape but ‘the dynamism of visual forces, an event rather than an appearance’. Rather than offering a chronological survey, Learning to See highlights continuity in Riley’s practice over time and her belief that seeing is a learned, active process. This exhibition at Turner Contemporary offers a rare opportunity to view Riley’s work against the context of the ever-shifting light, skies and tides of Margate. Bridget Riley is a British artist best known as a pioneer of Op Art (Optical Art), a movement that uses geometric patterns to create the illusion of movement, vibration, and depth. Born in 1931, Riley rose to prominence in the 1960s with striking black-and-white paintings that seemed to ripple, pulse, and shift before the viewer’s eyes. Her work explores how colour, line, and form affect human perception, often creating dynamic visual experiences from carefully structured patterns. Over time, she expanded her practice into bold colour compositions, continuing to experiment with rhythm, contrast, and spatial tension.
