Scaling Slowly: Negotiating a Long Term Practice-Based Teacher Education Partnership Abstract: Teacher education has long faced the two worlds problem - the disconnect between the context of university teacher education courses and schools where preservice teachers are placed with practicing teachers. This talk will address this dilemma by describing a career-long (over 20 years) project aimed at cultivating a school-university partnership to develop a professional learning community for middle-school science students, teachers, preservice teachers, and university faculty and graduate students. The resulting collaboration cannot be easily characterized in traditional categories, such as professional learning community (PLC), professional development school (PDS), supervised field placement, or methods course. I describe the notion of scaling slowly in an ongoing and dynamic learning community that occurs across different sites, places, or contexts, spanning decades of collaborative negotiation of problems of practice. -- CSTL is committed to supporting and developing the best possible science and mathematics teachers and elevating the capacity of practicing teachers. CSTL offers multiple programs for undergraduate and graduate students, and educators to teach STEM in classrooms all over the world. Located at Northern Arizona University’s campus in Flagstaff, Arizona, CSTL offers both in-person and online courses. Visit our website to learn more!
