Normally three physicians practise in Tofield. But five years ago, two doctors left and the town was down to just one physician. That crisis spurred the creation of the Tofield, Ryley, Beaver County Community Attraction and Retention Committee (CARC). While Alberta Health Services is responsible for recruiting new physicians, the committee worked hand in hand with them. After potential recruits toured the Tofield hospital with the site manager, committee members picked them up and showed them what the area has to offer from a lifestyle perspective. Along with AHS, they were successful in convincing two new physicians to come here. Drs. Racha Sabha and Mursi Jallad joined the exiting physician, Dr. Salahdine Abuzehar. All three rural family physicians practise at the Tofield Medical Clinic. CARC then switched its focus to retention of health professionals. They discovered the physicians suffered poor internet service while at the hospital. CARC helped get a wifi booster for the roof of the hospital and found a better internet provider. CARC regularly shows appreciation for health providers in their area by organizing drive-by appreciation parades, delivering baked treats and thank you cards and much more. One of CARC’s biggest accomplishments so far was hosting a skills weekend for 36 nursing and medicine students from the University of Alberta. Local health professionals hosted skill stations at the Tofield Health Centre during the day on Saturday. The rest of the weekend was spent experiencing the rural lifestyle, including a community dinner, a bull bash indoor rodeo event, music and darts at the Moonshine Café, paintballing and an outdoor wiener roast at nearby Islet Lake. Instead of staying at a hotel, students were billeted with local residents giving them another opportunity to connect with community members. Congratulations to the Tofield, Ryley and Beaver County Community Attraction and Retention Committee, recipients of the 2021 RhPAP Rhapsody Community Award.
