Every week on Wednesday, we premiere another hidden gem—another rejected score lost to time. Whether it was deemed "too bold," "too unconventional," or simply fell victim to studio politics, these compositions deserve to be heard. The rejected score is every film composer’s worst nightmare, and unfortunately, at times, an inescapable occupational hazard. Gabriel Yared, the Academy Award-winning composer behind The English Patient, spent over a year crafting a sweeping, operatic soundtrack for Troy (2004), only to have it discarded at the last minute. His music, rich with choral grandeur, Mediterranean influences, and tragic motifs, was deemed “too classical and overpowering” by the studio after test screenings. In a rush to replace it, James Horner was brought in to compose a more conventional Hollywood action score in just a few weeks. Though never officially released, Yared’s Troy score remains one of the most famous lost compositions in film history. Here, I’ve compiled and seamlessly mixed various surviving recordings—including quieter sections that have been carefully enhanced—so more of this beautiful, unreleased work can be heard clearly. Did Warner Bros. make the right choice, or was a masterpiece unjustly buried? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Great for reading The Iliad, diving into Greek mythology, or immersing yourself in the epic world of ancient Greece.
