Tatar composer Farid (Farit) Yarullin (1914-1943) was killed in the WWII in October 1943 at Dubrowna near Vitebsk in nowaday's Belorussia, being the USSR army at age 29. His ballet based on Tatar fairytale "Shrale" written between 1939 and 1941 (the year of the outbreak of war), seems to be his only large work, and it was the first national ballet of Tatarstan, the Islamic area within Russian Empire and consequently Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The whole ballet is based on Tatar ethnic materials especially pentatonic (As a Japanese I feel attatched toward it although Tatarstan is far from Japan) but we can also find the strong influence and tradition of Russian ballet decendent from Tchaikovsky. The war never allowed him to complete the ballet so in Mar 1945 the other people completed it and gave the premier performance in Kazan, the capital of Tatar ASSR. Then in 1950 it was restored again by the Russian composers Vlasimir Fere and Vlasov, who was active in Kyrghiz SSR and performed at Malyi Theatre in Leningrad. Today this version is rather popular but the former one also continued to be staged. This duet is highlight of the whole ballet. For details of the ballet, see the page on website of mariinskiy Theatre http://www.mariinskiy.com/?perfomance... The arranger Rinat Shakirov (b.1962) is a Kazakhstan-born Tatar pianist. In 2002 he completed the suite of his arrangement for piano solo. The construction of his suite is below; 1. Introduction 2. Evil Spirits' Procession (March 1 - Mermaids - Dwarfs - March 2) 3. Shurale 4. Duet Besides, the world-acclaimed pianist Rem Urasin also arranged Shurale for piano solo in the suite but I can't find the score. фарид яруллин (Татарстан): Дует из Балет "Шурале" (1939-41) Обработка Рината Сагидовича Шакирова
