Twelve-year-old Alicia faces persecution for her Christian faith in rural Mexico—where "just worshiping Jesus" means threats of violence, loss of land, and community rejection. Despite being warned they would be killed or burned alive, Alicia and her family refused to abandon Christ. This is her story of courage, music, and miraculous intervention. In remote Oaxaca, Mexico, ancestral rituals have replaced true Christian worship. When Alicia's family and 18 other Christian families refused to support local religious festivals, systematic persecution began. Her father was arrested and beaten. Christian farmers were banned from their land. Children were threatened with expulsion from school and denial of medical care. The village leaders warned them: leave your faith or be expelled—or worse. Alone in her room, Alicia found strength through worship songs and prayer. "What scared me most was that they would kill us... burn us one by one," she remembers. But she kept singing to Jesus, the gift God gave her even when everything else was taken away. How Open Doors Helped: For 70 years, Open Doors has strengthened Christians in the world's most dangerous and restricted countries. When persecution escalated, Open Doors workers provided persecution preparedness training, emotional support, and economic empowerment projects including sheep-breeding to help families restore their dignity and independence. Through fasting, prayer, and community support, a miracle happened—village leaders agreed to negotiate. While strict limitations remain, Alicia's family can now worship Jesus in their home, celebrating Christmas with simple but heartfelt gatherings. The Bigger Picture: Over 380 million Christians globally are persecuted for their faith, making Christianity the most persecuted religion on the planet. Yet God is working powerfully even in the most restricted places, transforming lives and building the church where it seems impossible.
