Established in 1600 under a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I, the company initially focused on trade in spices, textiles, and other valuable goods from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Over time, it evolved into a quasi-governmental entity, establishing its own armies, controlling vast territories, and influencing political affairs across South Asia. By the 18th century, the EIC had effectively taken over large parts of India, exercising military and administrative control, particularly after its victory at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. It ruled India through a combination of direct governance and alliances with local rulers, but its oppressive policies and economic exploitation led to widespread resentment. This culminated in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, after which the British Crown dissolved the company in 1874 and assumed direct rule over India. The East India Company’s legacy is one of both commercial success and colonial exploitation, shaping the modern history of Britain, India, and global trade.
