Remembering Karen Carpenter March 2 1950-February 4 1983 Carl Goldman, FM 100 Los Angeles did a radio interview with Karen in late 1978. At the end of the interview Karen was asked how she’d like for herself and Richard to be remembered decades later, and this was her response: “Well, we want to be remembered for, if you will, our contribution to music because that is the main, main thing in our lives, in our careers is to present to the best of our ability what comes from within us through our music. I do it through singing, and Richard does it through his writing and his orchestrating, his conducting, and his producing. And we always produce our product in the same way, it comes right from Richard picking the material, again to arranging it, and we both produce it, and we follow it straight through, we do practically all of the, all of the recording, the instruments, all of the vocals. We mix it ourselves, and then Richard follows it right into the mastering room. We really try to put out the best product that we can. We want people to just think nice thoughts when they think about us. We’ve tried to maintain some kind of a stable, even keel over the years, because as you know this business has a tendency to shake egos and stuff like that, but I hope we haven’t really changed that much, and just to be remembered as good musicians and good people.” Today marks 39 years since Karen passed away. She was the drummer who sang. Her music and career was so important to her, so I’d like to think that she would be proud and happy to know that after all of these years that her phenomenal voice still resonates in hearts, soothes souls, and brings so much joy. The Carpenters legacy continues to endure, and Karen’s inimitable, beautiful voice is very much alive every time I don a pair of earphones, play a record, or crank up the volume on my car stereo. Her superb voice takes me back to another place and time, and just like that it’s yesterday once more. Karen’s legacy continues to live on, and I’m thankful for the music.
