Tony Conigliaro is interviewed on the field by WHDH TV in Boston's Ned Martin after the Red Sox slugger homered in his comeback game in 1969! Conigliaro suffered a devastating eye injury when he was beaned by Jack Hamilton during the 1967 Impossible Dream season and he missed the rest of that campaign and the entire 1968 season. A plan to come back as a pitcher was shelved when his eyesight improved enough to give hitting another shot, and he reclaimed his right field spot in spring training. In the season opener on April 8, 1969 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore Conigliaro hit a dramatic two-run homer in the 10th inning, and walked and scored the go-ahead run in the 12th, as the Red Sox beat the Orioles, 5-4. It was a happy and relieved Tony C postgame, the local hero still confident/cocky enough to predict that the Sox would win it all in '69! With his questions, Martin (apparently having just won The Masters 😜 ) did a nice job capturing the magic of Tony's first game back. Conigliaro would hit 20 homers and drive in 82 runs in 1969 and earn The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year award. He hit a career-high 36 home runs with 116 RBIs in 1970 before his eyesight began bothering him again. After a final comeback attempt in 1975, Conigliaro retired at age 30. Box score in comments.
