Diagnosis requires identifying the mold in the affected tissue via biopsy and confirming it with a fungal culture. A complete blood count is performed to look for neutropenia. An endoscopic examination of the nasal passages may be required. Imaging, such as a CT scan of the lungs and sinuses, is frequently used. A reverse halo sign and a low neutrophil count indicates mucormycosis. MRI with gadolinium contrast is currently the investigation of choice in rhinoorbito cerebral mucormycosis. Biopsy samples can be cultured to confirm the diagnosis. The genus and species of fungus are determined by the appearance of the fungus under a microscope. The appearance can vary, but generally shows wide, ribbon-like filaments that, unlike aspergillosis, branch at right angles, resembling moose antlers, and may be seen to be invading blood vessels. Dr. Shree Cuddapah Rao, discusses in detail about the investigations done to confirm Mucormycosis.
