We know more about the surface of the moon, 250,000 miles away, than the center of the earth, only 4,000 miles below us. As you might imagine, the conditions at the center of the earth - or any large planet or star - are very different than on the surface. The center of planets and stars have incredibly high pressures (millions of atmospheres) and incredibly high temperatures (hundreds of thousands of degrees). This is the realm of high energy density (HED) physics. We are not likely to ever visit the center of planets and stars – but we can investigate those conditions in the laboratory through the use of pulse power. In this video, Dr. Simon Bland of Imperial College describes his work on using the MAGPIE pulse power machine to create, for very short periods of time, the HED conditions you might find in the center of planets. With these studies, we can learn about how planets evolve, how stars are born and die, and how the universe works.
