In this episode of Accounting Technology Lab, Randy Johnston and Brian Tankersley report live from CES 2026, separating the AI hype from genuine innovation. While much of the show floor was filled with “AI-powered” appliances—microwaves, washers, and lawn mowers that added little real value—the hosts focused on meaningful AI advancements for business users. The standout trend? On-premises AI powered by Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. Vendors like UGREEN and Qualcomm demonstrated AI systems capable of running large language models locally—without sending sensitive data to the cloud. These systems automatically index, organize, summarize, and semantically search documents, photos, and voice memos, effectively becoming private AI-powered document management systems. The hosts highlight how local AI solves a major concern for accounting firms: privacy. Unlike cloud-based transcription and summarization tools, these NAS devices process data internally with no recurring subscription costs. They also preview AI-powered camera systems with multimodal identity recognition and smart alerts—though those products are still pending release. Bottom line: CES 2026 revealed a lot of “checkbox AI,” but local, privacy-focused AI infrastructure represents real business value for accounting professionals.
