Coronavirus: WHO to add drug dexamathasone to COVID-19 guidelines | FULL

The World Health Organization announced during a media briefing on Wednesday that it would add the drug dexamathasone to its clinical guidelines on COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The move comes after a research team from the University of Oxford released results of a study in the United Kingdom that found that in a trial of 2,104 patients, dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-third in patients who required ventilators and one-fifth in patients who required supplemental oxygen. On Wednesday, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) health emergencies program, stressed that the steroid drug is just one of many breakthroughs needed to “effectively deal” with COVID-19. He added that dexamathasone should only be used under “close clinical supervision,” and said it has only been shown to be useful in the treatment of patients who are severely ill.
