Trafford City Alumni: The first team to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1933, Art Rooney paid a $2500 franchise fee to the National Football League and formed a professional football team called the Pittsburgh Pirates. Following the 1939 season, Rooney knew that his professional football team needed their own identity, and he looked to the public to help him come up with a new team name. He chose the name the Steelers. In 1940, the Pittsburgh Steelers reported to training camp at Saint Francis College in Loretto PA. On August 28, 1940, while only an exhibition game, the Trafford City Alumni became the first team to ever play the newly branded Pittsburgh Steelers at the Duquesne football field before a crowd of 4000 spectators. Narrated by Andrew Capets, Trafford Historical Society and board member of the Trafford Community Public Library. As local funding to the Trafford Library continues to be cut, we are looking for new ways to raise money and reach out to the community.
