Chris Rea Artist's Statement April 2011 I love the work of Hodgkin and Phoebe Traquair and the later works of Monet, and in my own work, I'm drawn to anything that involves bright colour. My latest thing is translating Arts & Craft design onto canvas. "The Return of the Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes" is the twenty-second studio album by Chris Rea, released in 2008. It comprises 3CDs and 2 x 10" Vinyl records in an 80-page hardback book. It is the second album of his project, the Hofner Blue Notes. The book relates the history of 'The Delmonts', an imaginary band in the early 1960s, who evolved into The Hofner Bluenotes. It also gives a brief history of the Hofner guitar and its importance in the development of music in Britain. The book is lavishly illustrated with period photos and mocked-up posters and newspaper cuttings about the band, together with some of Rea's paintings, and photos of Hofner guitars. The music was recorded by Rea (guitars), Colin Hodgkinson (bass) and Martin Ditcham (drums), who feature in the book, together with Niel Drinkwater and Robert Ahwai. Howard Hodgkin, a British artist whose lush, semi-abstract paintings, aquiver with implicit drama, established him as one of the most admired artists of the postwar period, died on Thursday in London. He was 84. Mr. Hodgkin was a relative latecomer to fame. A slow, methodical worker who could spend years building up a painting’s surface, he did not have a solo show until he was 30, and for years thereafter toiled against the grain, his work at odds with prevailing fashion. Hodgkin's first solo show was in London in 1962. In 1980, Hodgkin was invited by John Hoyland to exhibit work as part of the Hayward Annual at the Hayward Gallery along with Gillian Ayres, Basil Beattie, Terry Setch, Anthony Caro, Patrick Caulfield, Ben Nicholson and others. In 1984, Hodgkin represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, in 1985 he won the Turner Prize, and in 1992 he was knighted. In 1995, Hodgkin printed the Venetian Views series, which depict the same view of Venice at four different times of day. Venice, Afternoon – one of the four prints – uses sixteen sheets, or fragments, in a hugely complex printing process which creates a colorful, painterly effect. This piece was given to the Yale Centre of British Art in June 2006 by the Israel family in order to complement the museum's already impressive collection of Hodgkins. In 2003, he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as a Companion of Honour. A major exhibition of his work was mounted at Tate Britain, London, in 2006. Also in 2006, The Independent declared him one of the 100 most influential gay people in Britain, as his work has helped many people express their emotions to others. In September 2010, Hodgkin and five other British artists, John Hoyland, John Walker, Ian Stephenson, Patrick Caulfield and R.B. Kitaj, were in an exhibition entitled The Independent Eye: Contemporary British Art From the Collection of Samuel and Gabrielle Lurie, at the Yale Center for British Art.
