In China, several new contradictions also appeared in society. The CPC was faced with a major challenge in finding solutions to these contradictions. In November 1956, the Second Plenary Session of the Eighth CPC Central Committee convened. Drawing on the lessons learned from Eastern Europe, the meeting emphasized that, in addition to ensuring the wellbeing of the country and people, the Party must also prevent cadres from being seen as privileged and removed from the masses. The meeting decided that action was required to rectify the work style of Party officials. The deliberations were extensive and took into account the lessons learned from the major international and domestic events in the past year. The outcome was that Mao Zedong thought on how to resolve the contradictions among the people began to mature. At the Supreme State Conference held at Zhongnanhai on February the 27th, 1957, Mao delivered a speech: "On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People 关于正确处理人民内部矛盾的问题". In it, he noted that in their nature, the contradictions among people were fundamentally different from those between the people and enemy forces. For the Party, which now governed the entire country, the most important task was to use democratic means, persuasion, and education to resolve the many contradictions among people. His speech was a major theoretical landmark on the CPC’s path to socialist construction. On April the 27th, 1957 the Central Committee issued “the Directive on the Rectification Movement 关于整风运动的指示”. As a manifesto for a Party-wide campaign targeting bureaucratism, sectarianism, and subjectivism, its aim was to improve workstyles within the Party. Three days later, Chairman Mao invited the leaders of the country’s other democratic parties to an informal discussion. By seeking the assistance of these democratic figures, he was demonstrating how sincere the CPC was about rectifying its work style. His hope was to create a vibrant political environment in which the socialist revolution and construction could thrive. It would give rise to a structure that was centralized yet democratic, disciplined yet free, and unified yet with scope for individual expression.
