Castelmezzano Potenza, located in the heart of the Dolomiti Lucane, perched and protected from these massive massifs of sandstone rock that the wind and rain have unceasingly carved through time, exposes itself in an unexpected way. In order to enter Castelmezzano Basilicata, we must first travel through a tunnel carved into the rock, immediately after passing a little groove. This stunning location was critical for the village's defense over the centuries, with its origins dating back to the X century a.c. The name stems from the Norman Castrum Medianum (meaning medium castle), which was built here between the XI and XIII centuries a.c. and is so named because of its location in relation to the nearby centers of Pietrapertosa and Brindisi Montagna. The ruins of the castle's walls, a tank for collecting rain water, and the stairs carved into the rock that provided access to the highest lookout point, from which it was possible to monitor the entire valley of the river Basento are still visible. The classic medieval town structure of #Castelmezzano is a rare example of a healthy balance between natural components and human intervention. When roaming throughout the area, a short simple hike from a village to Gradinata Normanna is a requirement. The trail begins at the settlement. The stairs lead to the summit of the landmark. The view of Castelmezzano Potenza and the surrounding area is stunning from there. The community is actually an agglomeration of concentric dwellings with sandstone roofs embedded in a rocky basin: structures are placed directly into the rock. There are numerous steep stairs that open between the lanes and allow you to climb to the overhanging peaks and enjoy the spectacular views of the Dolomiti Lucane. Caizzo Square is the beating heart of Castelmezzano Italia, at the center of which stands the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, with its grand Romanic-style front.
