David Cameron meets Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka face to face

David Cameron travelled into the northern areas of Sri Lanka on Friday, which saw the worst of the fighting during the country's 27-year civil war, in which the rebels sought an independent Tamil homeland. The Prime Minister met with displaced civilians who are still living in a camp four years after the end of the war. Many of their homes and lands are still occupied by the military or designated as high security zones. He also met with the region's leader in the main city of Jaffna, as well as editors of a newspaper still targeted in attacks. He is in Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Commonwealth has been harshly criticised for holding the three-day summit in Colombo after the Sri Lankan government repeatedly refused to allow independent investigations into alleged war crimes and rights abuses during and after the civil war. Mr Cameron has explained his attendance by saying that engaging Sri Lanka at the summit is preferable to isolating and shaming the country into submission.
