Baseball Hall of Fame's Adam Halay talks hosting a tabletop gaming milestone in Cooperstown and more

On April 1, 2023, a group of about two dozen APBA Baseball players — including 11 APBA Hall of Famers going back to the inaugural Class of 2001 — converged on the Baseball Hall of Fame's learning center for the first-ever tabletop dice tournament held inside the hallowed facility. We reached out to the hall on Aug. 8 asking if we could bring 12 to 24 folks to the Hall of Fame and set up a few folding tables for a one-day competition. Adam Halay, assistant sales manager for the hall, promptly responded and facilitated an important day in tabletop sports gaming history. On Opening Day weekend, competition commenced, with APBA Hall of Famer Steve Ryan (Class of 2021) and his 2020 Braves going on a remarkable roll (pun intended) to a championship over three-time APBA national champ Steve Skoff's 1911 Giants. From load-in to load-out, Halay and his team were the consummate professionals. Adam was gracious enough to share a few insights during the height of the divisional round between two divisions totaling 14 players. Here, he discusses optimal times to host an event, as well as upcoming initiatives at the hall. The Cooperstown tournament coincided with the April 1 Twin Cities APBA Baseball Tournament created by Jim Fraasch, founder of the blog Jim's APBA Barn. APBA regional tournaments began in earnest in what has come to be known as the "APBA summer of 2013." Hundreds of APBA gamers roll dice at nearly two dozen tabletop sports events nationwide.
