Today I was called out to a customer complaining about a flickering kitchen light and a socket that was apparently overheating. First issue was a socket outlet that the customer’s dad said was causing his phone charger to get hot. After testing, everything checked out fine — phone chargers can naturally get warm under load. The bigger issue was the kitchen light fitting. It was a metal fitting with an earth terminal present, but only a two-core (live and neutral) supply cable was available. There was no Class II symbol and no paperwork for the fitting. As a registered NICEIC electrician, I could not reconnect a fitting that appeared to require an earth without proper earthing. The customer didn’t want ceiling damage to locate an earth, so I installed a temporary batten holder as a safe solution. Always ensure fittings are correctly earthed where required. ________________________________________
