(4 Nov 1995) Natural Sound While negotiators struggle to forge a Balkan peace plan in Dayton, Ohio, regional talks on the last Serb-held slice of Croatia have been cancelled after rebel Serbs failed to show up. The two sides were due to meet in the Croatian town of Osijek, but the Serbs objected to meeting on Croatian territory. International mediators were forced to travel alone to the Serb-held town of Erdut. The regional talks were cancelled after Croatian, U-S and U-N representatives waited three hours for the Serbs in the Croatian town of Osijek, near eastern Slavonia. U-N mediator Thorvald Stoltenberg and Peter Galbraith, the U-S Ambassador to Croatia, then headed to Serb-held Erdut to talk to the Serbs. The last round of regional peace talks was held last week. It was not clear if they would resume Sunday. Galbraith said he and Stoltenberg were due back in Dayton early next week to report on the talks. He said it was a difficult process and that tough issues remained. Negotiators were to have discussed a document on the peaceful reintegration of eastern Slavonia into Croatia and human rights guarantees for its Serb residents.
