#goodomens #crowley #originalsong #ineffablehusbands #davidtennant #musicaltheatre #neilgaiman Special thanks to @holmee on Tumblr for the GORGEOUS thumbnail art- I asked for Crowley dramatically sprawled out on a piano and she couldn’t have possibly delivered finer results. My favorite songs in musicals have always been epic character-driven pieces that swing wildly between musical textures and emotions, such as Dust and Ashes, Epiphany or The Ballad of Jane Doe. Additionally, I’ve always adored the passion and grandeur of rock opera, and there is perhaps no character that fits this style better than Crowley. The minute the title and opening chords of this song popped into my head, I knew I had to write the piece our favorite dramatic demon deserved. I wrote the first draft of the lyrics in about a week in September, and I’ve worked off and on on the arrangement for nearly eight months. I like to consider this piece the culmination of the first two years of my music degree, as it incorporates everything I’ve learned about musical theatre, classical, and rock music. I drew inspiration from musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Ride the Cyclone and Sweeney Todd, composers like Brahms and Rachmaninoff (and David Arnold), and bands like Queen, ABBA and My Chemical Romance, with a dash of Argentinean tango. At the risk of patting myself on the back, it’s quite possibly the best song I’ve ever written- CERTAINLY my most ambitious. It has challenged me so much as both a composer and a performer (no song has pushed the limits of my low range quite like this one), and I am so excited to finally share it with all of you.
