Cashin House, also known as "The Pier," began as a 1906 rubber plantation pier in Lim Chu Kang, Singapore, converted into a house in the 1920s for workers and later a family retreat for the Cashin family, including lawyer Howard Cashin, serving as an idyllic weekend home until 2009 and a key site during the 1942 Japanese invasion. Today, it's fenced off within the Sungei Buloh Nature Park, slated for sensitive restoration as an educational hub for heritage and nature. Early Days & Plantation Life (1906-1940s) Origins: Built by Henry Cashin (grandfather of Howard Cashin) as a pier for his rubber estate, it was built to transport rubber to the main Kranji area. Transformation: In the 1920s, accommodation was added, turning it into a seaside pavilion and retreat, affectionately known as "The Pier". Family Home: The Cashin family, owning vast rubber plantations, used it as a rustic getaway, adding modern amenities like air conditioning later on. World War II & Japanese Occupation (1942) Strategic Landing Site: The pier was a landing point for the Japanese Imperial Army during their invasion of Singapore in February 1942. Comfort Station: During the occupation, the house was used as a "comfort stop" (a euphemism for military prostitution) by Japanese officers, and a war shrine was built on the grounds. Post-War & Howard Cashin's Era (1945-2009) Reclamation & Renovation: After the war, Howard Edmund Cashin (grandson of Henry) had the war shrine removed and the house renovated, making it a beloved home with manicured gardens, tennis courts, and a bathing area. Royal Visits: The Sultan of Johor was a frequent guest, arriving by boat from across the straits. Modern Day & Future Closure & Fencing: The house became inaccessible after Howard Cashin's passing in 2009, with the area fenced off by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA). Nature Park Gateway: It's now part of the Lim Chu Kang Nature Park (part of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve), planned for sensitive restoration to host exhibitions and educational programs, preserving its unique history and connection to nature. #CashinHouse #HistoryOfCashinHouse #LimChuKang #ThePier #SingaporeHeritage #SingaporeHistory #HeritageSite #HeritageTrails #HiddenHeritage #SGHeritage #HeritageWalk #RememberingSingapore #SingaporePlantationHistory #PlantationHistory #RubberPlantation #RubberTrade #ColonialHistory #RuralSingapore #KampongLife #OldSingapore #AgriculturalHistory #SingaporePast #SGHistory #HistoryMatters#NeoTiew #NeoTiewEstate #Kranji #KranjiJetty #NorthwestSingapore #SungeiBuloh #SungeiBulohWetlandReserve #NatureAndHeritage #KampongNeoTiew #SingaporeBackroads #OffTheBeatenPath #ExploreSingapore #SultanJohor
