Introducing El Capitan, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) first exascale supercomputer and one of the fastest computers on the planet, housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise with AMD's leading-edge MI300A Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), El Capitan has over 11,000 compute nodes and exceeds 2 exaFLOPs of peak performance. A shared resource between LLNL, and Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, El Capitan offers a more than 20x increase in performance over LLNL’s previous most powerful supercomputer Sierra. El Capitan will play a crucial role in maintaining the U.S. nuclear deterrent by enabling advanced modeling and simulations required for the NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship Program. These improvements also benefit the general open science enterprise with Tuolumne. Tuolumne is a smaller version of El Capitan devoted to unclassified science for the entire laboratory and our collaborators. These machines will be world-class resources used to solve problems in materials science, nuclear structure, astrophysics, climate science, drug discovery, earthquake simulation and many other fields. El Capitan and Tuolumne mark a monumental leap in high performance computing. As we deploy these systems in service to the nation, we open the door to unprecedented possibilities. 💻 LLNL News: https://www.llnl.gov/news 📲 Instagram: / livermore_lab 🤳 Facebook: / livermore.lab 🐤 Twitter: / livermore_lab 🔔 Subscribe: / livermorelab About LLNL: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has a mission of strengthening the United States’ security through development and application of world-class science and technology to: 1) enhance the nation’s defense, 2) reduce the global threat from terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, and 3) respond with vision, quality, integrity and technical excellence to scientific issues of national importance.
