The printer's origins stretch back to 1844 when founder William T. Butler joined William Langford opened a printing works in Frome, Somerset. Everyone who loves books knows the name of Butler & Tanner, Britain’s oldest and foremost colour printer – established in Frome in 1844 and recently in 2006 known as Butler, Tanner & Dennis, after Felix Dennis rescues the company with a cash infusion. The name changes to Butler Tanner and Dennis. This was the printer that Allen Lane went to in 1935 to print Ariel, the first ever Penguin Book. FAMOUS Books printed by Bulter Tanner & Dennis: 1935, Ariel – the first Penguin Book 1950, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe 1965, James Bond - Dr NO by Ian Fleming Butler & Tanner was an English printing company that ran from 1844 to 2006, based in Frome, Somerset. The company was Incorporated in 1923 as Butler & Tanner Limited.
