The Mystery of Lost Ships - Ghost Ships - The Dark Ocean // Credit - Google

The Mary Celeste (1872): The Incident: On December 4, 1872, the Canadian brigantine Dei Gratia found the Mary Celeste adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, between the Azores and Portugal. The ship was seaworthy, with its cargo of alcohol intact, and there was no sign of a struggle. However, the ship's lifeboat, chronometer, and navigational equipment were missing, and the crew of ten, including Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, and their daughter, were nowhere to be found. Theories: Alcohol Fumes: One theory suggests that fumes from the alcohol cargo could have caused an explosion scare, leading the crew to abandon ship in a panic. Rogue Waves/Storms: Sudden, violent weather could have forced the crew to abandon ship in the lifeboat, which was then lost in the storm. Food Contamination: Some speculate that contaminated food or water could have caused illness or delirium, leading to the crew's disappearance. Piracy/Mutiny: Though there was no evidence of a struggle, piracy or mutiny cannot be entirely ruled out. Insurance Fraud: Though widely considered unlikely, some theorized that the ship was abandoned as part of an insurance fraud scheme. The Mystery: The lack of conclusive evidence has allowed the Mary Celeste mystery to endure, fueling countless fictional accounts and theories. 2. The USS Cyclops (1918): The Incident: The USS Cyclops, a large U.S. Navy collier, vanished without a trace in the Bermuda Triangle in March 1918. It was carrying over 300 crew and passengers and a large cargo of manganese ore. No wreckage or bodies were ever recovered. Theories: Storms: The area is prone to severe storms, and it's possible the Cyclops was caught in a powerful storm and sunk. Structural Failure: The ship was known to have some structural issues, and it's possible that it broke apart at sea. Enemy Action: During World War I, some speculated that German submarines could have sunk the Cyclops, but there is no evidence to support this. Rogue Waves: A rogue wave could have swamped the ship. Human Error: There were some reports of problems with the captain, and some theorize that human error caused the loss of the ship. The Mystery: The sheer size of the Cyclops and the complete lack of any wreckage make its disappearance one of the most perplexing maritime mysteries. 3. The Carroll A. Deering (1921): The Incident: The five-masted schooner Carroll A. Deering was found aground on Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in January 1921. The crew was missing, and the ship appeared to have been abandoned in a hurry. Navigational equipment, personal belongings, and the ship's logbook were missing. Theories: Piracy: The area was known for piracy, and it's possible the crew was taken by pirates. Bootleggers: During Prohibition, bootleggers were active in the area, and some speculate they may have been involved. Mutiny: Tensions among the crew could have led to a mutiny. Storms: A severe storm could have forced the crew to abandon ship. The Mystery: The rapid abandonment of the ship and the missing items have fueled numerous theories, but the exact cause remains unknown. 4. The SS Baychimo (1931): The Incident: The SS Baychimo, a cargo ship, became trapped in ice near Barrow, Alaska, in October 1931. After several attempts to free the ship, the crew abandoned it, believing it was irreparably damaged. However, the Baychimo continued to drift for decades, becoming a "ghost ship" sighted sporadically by Inuit hunters and other vessels. The Mystery: The Baychimo's ability to survive for so long in the harsh Arctic conditions made it a legendary maritime mystery. 5. The Octavius (1775): The Incident: This is a legend, that tells of a ship found adrift off the coast of Greenland in 1775. The ship was boarded, and the entire crew was found frozen solid. The captains log, had entries that showed the ship had been trapped in ice for 13 years, and that the captain had been trying to navigate the north west passage. The Mystery: Whether the ship and crew actually existed, it is a very chilling tale.
