Fiona Koh Li Ping is a 31-year-old visual artist born in Singapore in 1994, with ancestral roots in Chenghai, Shantou. A graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, Fiona’s practice centres on still-life painting that explores memory, cultural value, and vanishing traditions. She is known for painting on Chinese newspapers — a fading medium she repurposes to preserve overlooked objects and stories from everyday life. Fiona’s meticulous technique and thoughtful use of materials create a dialogue between past and present, capturing the transient nature of Singaporean culture. Her works have been exhibited locally and abroad, and are held in major collections including The Ngee Ann Kongsi, Abacus Capital and other major institutions, establishing her as one of Singapore’s most promising contemporary artists. Fiona has specially curated a series of four artworks titled “Tides of Taste”for this exhibition. These paintings juxtapose the precious and the ordinary within Teochew food traditions: flower crab against silver moony, rabbit fish against kuning bones. Each pairing reveals how value is socially shaped: festive tables prize sweetness and shine, while humble staples sustain everyday life. Painted on Chinese newspapers filled with job listings and lottery odds, the works reflect Singapore’s delicate balance between aspiration and subsistence, between what we celebrate and what we overlook.
