(4 Sep 2005) 1. Exterior government building 2. Set-up shot of interior ministry spokesman Latfullah Mashal 3. SOUNDBITE (English): Latfullah Mashal, interior Ministry spokesman: "Yesterday with the request of the British government, the international coalition forces in Afghanistan, and also Afghan national police mounted an operation, a search operation to find, or if needed, to rescue Mr David Addison, a British national who was kidnapped by remnants of the Taliban on Wednesday. But with sadness I would like to report that during the search operation the security forces found his dead body in a remote mountainous area." 4. Cutaway 5. SOUNDBITE (English): Latfullah Mashal, interior Ministry spokesman: "We believe that the Taliban of the remnants of the Taliban or the criminal gang who had abducted Mr David killed him right after abduction. With these kind of brutal activities, the remnants of the taliban show that they not only are they the enemies of peace and stability in Afghanistan, but they are also the enemies of reconstruction and rehabilitation of Afghanistan. Mr David was working in road construction company which helps the people of Afghanistan get connected and get easier access to markets." 6. Cutaway 7. SOUNDBITE (English): Latfullah Mashal, interior Ministry spokesman: "Two dead bodies, unknown dead bodies, were found in Daman district of Kandahar province by local villagers. The dead bodies were brought from another location to Daman district. As we had earlier said our transit office in (inaudible), on the border of Pakistan, had not registered any Japanese citizen that has legally entered Afghanistan. We believe that the terrorist or the remnants of the Taliban have kidnapped them right on the border or on the other side of the border, killed them and have brought them inside afghanistan and threw them somewhere in the desert." 8. Cutaway picture of Karzai 9. SOUNDBITE (English): Latfullah Mashal, interior Ministry spokesman: "We believe that this will not affect the overall security situation in Afghanistan. We are going to the parliamentarian elections, historic elections in Afghanistan. The enemies of peace and stability and the remnants of al-Qaida and the Taliban will try their best to disrupt peace and stability during the lection and before election. They focus on soft targets, attacking candidates, burning schools, aid workers. But the security workers have also taken necessary measures to provide needed security for civilians, candidates and international workers in Afghanistan." 10. Afghan flag STORYLINE: A kidnapped British engineer was found dead in Afghanistan on Saturday. Two other bodies discovered in the country''s southern desert were identified as missing Japanese tourists, raising fears that elections later this month may be disrupted by militant violence. US-led coalition troops raiding a Taliban hideout in the Afghan mountains on Saturday found the body of a Briton believed to be David Addison, Britain''s Foreign Office said. Addison and his interpreter were working for a foreign company refurbishing the road from southern Kandahar city to the western city of Herat. They were abducted when militants attacked his convoy on Wednesday, killing three policemen guarding them. Interior Ministry spokesman Latfullah Mashal said the assault on the convoy occurred on the main highway in the western province of Farah, a region spared much of the violence that has wracked southern and eastern Afghanistan where Taliban-led rebels are more active. He said no contact had been made with the kidnappers but blamed a criminal gang.
