Location tag: Chicago, IL Location tag: John Marshall Metropolitan High School Police were summoned after 16-year-old Dnigma Howard reportedly got into a confrontation with the school’s assistant principal over the use of her cellphone in class. Howard’s father said she refused to leave the school and flipped over desks. When two officers tried to escort Howard off school premises, they claimed the teen fought and bit them, causing her and one officer to fall down a flight of stairs. But Dnigma recounted a different version of the story. "As I tried to walk the other way, I guess he like, put out his hand and pushed me toward the stairs. He caused me to fall down the stairs and I grabbed his vest and we all fell down the stairs." - Dnigma Howard When she continued to resist arrest at the bottom of the stairs, the officers are seen using a stun gun to subdue her. Her father, Laurentio Howard, was summoned by school administrators and recorded the end of the altercation. "The police officer tried to push her down the stairs, so she grabbed the police officer by the vest. She was basically defending herself." - Laurentio Howard Dnigma’s father said school administrators should have handled the situation differently because they had prior knowledge of her behavioral issues. Dnigma was charged with 2 felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and 2 misdemeanor counts of resisting a peace officer. A judge ordered Dnigma to house arrest until her court date on Feb 19. The two officers were removed from the school, and are currently on medical leave. "CPS strives to create safe and supportive learning environments for all students, and this disturbing incident has absolutely no place in our schools. To ensure a thorough review of this situation is conducted, we are asking the district's Office of the Inspector General to review the matter and we will fully support the ongoing investigation by the City's Civilian Office of Police Accountability." - Chicago Public Schools In Dec 2018, dozens of student activists rallied in DC for police-free schools to mitigate the school-to-prison pipeline. “Schools assign cops to students of color. We receive harsher punishments for the same behaviors. We’re suspended on much higher rates than our white peers. - Leaders Igniting Transformation | Milwaukee - Brikaia Hines. #PoliceBrutality #Police #Tased #BlackLivesMatter Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news.
