Mexico is full of amazing, adventures, but sometimes you have to look off the beaten path. Braden and I prefer to be away from the coast, where temperatures can soar into the 40s, and sand fleas can be a traveller's worst nightmare (especially travellers who don't stay in fancy air conditioned hotels). Instead, we prefer the mountains, where the climate is more temperate, biting insects are scarce, and where there is less congestion from the throngs of tourists you'll find in places like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Cancun. Even better? Mountains are also where you find waterfalls. A short trek away from Taxco we discovered Mil Cascadas. Led by our new friend - and budding eco-tourist guide - Arun, we drove nearly two hours into the mountains in the back of his trusty pickup to a place that can't be reached by bus or kombi. From afar, amid the drying landscape, we could see the lush bright green of a river canyon. When we arrived Arun's friend Mau and his dad set up rappel lines for those brave enough to descend over 100 feet to the bottom of the first, and largest, waterfall. The water was ice blue, but unlike it's glacier appearance, it was perfect for swimming. As the hot sun beat down on us from overhead, the cool water was a welcome reprieve from the heat, and offered relaxing pit stops on the hike to the last blue pool at the bottom. Mexico is full of beautifully stunning, gem-like rivers and lakes waiting to be discovered. From San Luis Potosi, to Veracruz, to Chiapas, and Guerrero, you don't need to find yourself at the ocean to enjoy a refreshing swim.
