Small groups in preschool—here’s how I do it! ✏️✨ After my last video on free-choice centers, I had lots of questions about my small-group setup. Quick reference: I teach half-day preschool (3 hours/day), and 1 hour is free-choice center time. During this hour, students pick any center they want, while I call kids to my table for small-group activities, and my para calls students to hers for art. Kids bring their name tag with them and then choose a new center when they’re done. Here’s how I plan my small groups: 1️⃣ Individual Goals: After assessments, every student gets two personalized goals. I group kids with similar goals for targeted games and activities. 2️⃣ Monthly Standards: I select important monthly skills (like rhyming or number recognition) and group students to practice those together. 3️⃣ Name Practice: I call students individually to work on name writing and letter formation. I used to stress about doing more small groups, but in preschool you’re always needed for problem-solving, fixing issues, and supporting kids. Now, my goal is to see each student in small group once (maybe twice!) a week, and that’s perfectly okay.
