Having done quite a bit of chainsaw work last week, to take down a load of trees to near ground level, a number of the chain teeth are now fairly blunt. Even when wood appears to be clean, the hardness of the wood, the tree sap, dirt and stone particles that have been drawn up the tree will cause the chainsaw teeth to blunt. For an effective and safe chainsaw you need to ensure that the chainsaw teeth are kept sharp and that the chain tension is also checked and kept tight enough that the chain does not come out of the chain guide. Remember to also check that your chainsaw has sufficient lubrication chain oil in the reservoir as without it you will damage the chainsaw, chainsaw chain and then possibly to yourself. When working with a chainsaw then spend time to check and/or sharpen the chainsaw teeth periodically throughout the day. Always when I have finished the job, normally that same evening, I spend some time to strip down the chainsaw so as to clean out the chain cover, check the chain tension and give the chainsaw a general clean. Make sure the safety lock is on and then place the chain cover back on before placing the chainsaw back into its bag. I do also empty out any remaining fuel but that’s probably just me. When sharpening the chainsaw chain teeth check the chain manufacturers guidelines so as to determine which angle to sharpen at. A clean, sharp, oiled and well looked after chainsaw is much safer to use than one that isn’t. Make sure to only use a chainsaw how it is intended to be used, and how you have been trained to use it.
