The content that resulted from Elvis’ recording sessions at Memphis’ Stax studios in 1973 yielded three albums with “Promised Land” probably the highlight of those. Despite being full of decent tracks and compiled in a way which makes it flow nicely, it is largely unknown outside the Elvis community. With no major hits contained therein, then by extension all of the other tracks on the album are virtually unknown by the wider public at large. One of the tracks which comes into that category is the ballad “Love Song of the Year”, which was the final track on Side one of the original vinyl album, released in January of 1975. Elvis recorded the track at Stax on 12 December 1973, the third of four tracks recorded that evening. The master was achieved in eight takes but despite originally lasting almost four minutes it was faded at three minutes and eighteen seconds for release. Post production took place on 2 and 11 January 1974 at RCA’s studio A in Nashville under the supervision of Elvis’ producer Felton Jarvis, with the band overdubs the first to take place. These overdubs were recorded with Dennis Linde and Alan Rush on guitars, Robert Galbraith on organ, Bobby Ogdin on piano and Randy Cullers on percussion. The overdub session on 11 January saw the strings recorded consisting of violins, violas and cellos and only after these were added was the master faded for inclusion on the album. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
