Back in the 1970s, the New Cities Plan envisioned turning Campbelltown, Camden and Appin into a huge triple city conglomerate, to have a population of 500,000 by 2001. There were bold plans for expressways, railways, and fresh ways of urban thinking, the centrepiece of which was the Georges River Expressway, a 37 km expressway that would have been the backbone of this new city conglomerate. Instead, almost none of the proposed infrastructure eventuated, and the area in 2021 was only home to 350,000. Come along with me in this video as we uncover all the hints of where the lost highways of Campbelltown were once planned to go, and discover why this plan failed.
