Hike to Mookini Heiau Ancient Hawaiian Treasure/Sacrifice(human/animal) Kamehameha Birthplace Kohala

Hike to Mo'okini Heiau. Ancient Hawaiian Treasure/Sacrifice(human/animal). Kamehameha Birth-site Additional information: Mookini Heiau and Kamehameha birthsite, Kohala    • Mookini Heiau and Kamehameha birthsite, Ko...   National Park Service Moʻokini Heiau Located in the Kohala Historical Sites State Monument on Hawaiʻi Island, Moʻokini is one of the oldest and most sacred heiau (temples) in the Hawaiian Islands. It is a luakini heiau, a type of temple used for ceremonies involving human or animal sacrifices, and was primarily dedicated to Kū, the god of war. The heiau was built around A.D. 480 and later expanded, according to legend, by the priest Paʻao. Stones for its construction were said to have been passed by hand over many miles. The heiau was historically reserved for high chiefs (aliʻi nui) and a strict code of conduct, the kapu system, was enforced there. In 1978, a descendant of the temple's lineage rededicated the site to the children of the land and lifted the restrictive kapu, making it a place of learning for all. Kamehameha's birthplace The birthplace of Kamehameha I, who went on to unite the Hawaiian Islands, is located just a few hundred yards from the Moʻokini Heiau. Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, was born in the Kapakai Royal Housing Complex around 1758. He later used the heiau as his personal war temple during his campaign to unify the islands. Human sacrifice As a luakini heiau dedicated to the war god Kū, Moʻokini was a site where human sacrifices were conducted. Human or animal sacrifices were reserved for the largest and most complex temples and were part of rituals meant to secure an aliʻi ʻai moku's authority and control over his lands. An ancient priest named Paʻao is said to have introduced the practice of human sacrifice to the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaiian gods Kū (god of war): One of the four great gods in Hawaiian religion, Kū was worshipped under many names. He was the god of war, politics, farming, and fishing. Rituals for Kū sometimes included human sacrifice. Moʻokini Heiau was dedicated to Kū. Lono (god of agriculture and peace): The god of fertility, agriculture, rain, and peace, Lono is honored during the annual Makahiki festival. During this season, war was forbidden. Kāne (god of creation, light, and life): Kāne is one of the four major Hawaiian deities and is the god of procreation, creation, and light. He is revered as the ancestor of chiefs and commoners. Worship of Kāne did not require human sacrifice. Kanaloa (god of the sea): One of the four major Hawaiian gods, Kanaloa is the deity of the ocean, long-distance voyaging, and the underworld. He is often depicted alongside Kāne. Wikipedia The Hawaiian phrase "Moʻokini Heiau" translates to "Many Lineages Temple". The full phrase can be broken down as follows: Moʻo: Can mean "genealogy" or "lineage". It can also refer to a moʻo, a mythological lizard or dragon-like deity. Kini: Refers to "many" or a "multitude". It is often used to describe a great number, specifically "40,000". Heiau: A pre-Christian place of worship, or a temple. The most common translation, "Many Lineages," reflects the temple's deep historical roots and the many generations of priests and chiefs connected to the site. It also references the legendary high priest Kuamoʻo Moʻokini, who is said to have established the original temple around 480 A.D.. The name could also be interpreted as "Many Moʻo," referencing the mythological lizard deities that were honored in ancient Hawaiian culture.
