Fethullah Gulen was born in Erzurum, in eastern Anatolia, on April 27, 1941. At a young age, he was a follower of Said Nursi. He later parted ways with Nursi’s followers and founded his own cult movement. He worked as an imam in different provinces of Turkey between 1959 and 1981. Gulen was arrested in 1971 by the post-coup junta and spent seven months in prison. On March 20, 1981, he retired as an imam from the Presidency of Religious Affairs. After his retirement he gave a series of sermons in popular mosques in major cities in Turkey. People were drawn to his message of a pious society. However, Gulen agitated people in his sermons by emotionally manipulating them. Agitation and emotional manipulation have been his strategic tools to generate revenues and recruit new members.
