Medical marijuana now has the kosher stamp of approval. Orthodox Union, the world's largest kosher certification agency, has granted the "OU" stamp to cannabis provided by Vireo Health in New York. The move adds cannabis to an already long list of kosher-approved items, including food, body lotions and antibiotics. Rabbis at Orthodox Union hope the kosher approval will combat the negative stigma associated with medical marijuana. "It's easy to comment and it's easy to criticize," said Rabbi Moshe Elefant of the Orthodox Union. "Part of our job is to make tough decisions, and when you hear people call and tell you how this is changing the quality of their life and they want it kosher certified it's hard to say no." An estimated 12 million people adhere to Jewish dietary laws in the United States, which requires anything ingested into the body to be certified kosher. According to Elefant, marijuana is naturally kosher, but the machinery used at the dispensary could taint the product. As a result, rabbis will regularly inspect the machinery at Vireo Health. "The OU is not certifying pot. The OU is not certifying drugs. The OU is not certifying recreational marijuana. In fact the OU does not certify cigarettes," Elefant said. "We're only certifying medical marijuana because as the name implies, it's medical and people can only use it if they have a prescription and if they bring that prescription to specific dispensaries."
