In theory HDR should be doable now! 🧐 HDR video offers a wider range of brightness and color compared to traditional standard dynamic range (SDR) content. This allows for more lifelike and impactful visuals. However, the biggest challenge with HDR hasn't been how to transport the extra information, but rather how to properly master and deliver the content. Dolby Vision has become a dominant player in the HDR space largely due to their comprehensive set of tools and rigorous testing processes. Mastering HDR content correctly requires a great deal of expertise and attention to detail. The AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media, has made significant strides in supporting HDR. It can now handle various HDR formats including: HDR10 HDR10+ Dolby Vision Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) Additionally, AV1 supports color depth of 8, 10, and 12 bits. This means that in theory, we now have the technical capabilities to efficiently compress and distribute high-quality HDR video using AV1. Of course, being able to compress and transport HDR is only half the battle. The video player on the user's device must be able to properly decode and display the HDR signal. This is where tone mapping comes into play. Tone mapping is the process of translating the wide brightness range of HDR content to the narrower range of an SDR display, or mapping one HDR format to another. It's a complex process that requires advanced algorithms and often benefits from GPU acceleration. The popular open source video player VLC, developed by VideoLAN, has integrated a library called libplacebo to handle HDR tone mapping. Libplacebo is a GPU-based filter library that can accurately convert between various HDR formats as well as map HDR to SDR for playback on non-HDR displays. This powerful library does a ton of complex processing using GPU shaders to ensure proper color reproduction. With the right combination of tools and expertise, delivering high-quality HDR video is now within reach. The key components are: 1. Proper mastering of the HDR content 2. Efficient compression and transport using a modern codec like AV1 3. Accurate tone mapping for playback on a wide range of devices While Dolby Vision has led the way with their proprietary ecosystem, open source projects like AV1 and libplacebo are democratizing HDR and making it more accessible. As more content providers and device manufacturers adopt these technologies, consumers can look forward to a brighter (pun intended) future for HDR video.
