Each year our league runs a singles competition open to players who play for teams in the same division. Players usually play round robin in groups of 4. The winner of the group progresses to the next round where it becomes knockout format all the way to the final. This is the semi-final between George Walmsley and Oliver Garmston in our Division 1 competition. Division 1 has a mix of players and styles and it's where are improving young players get to test themselves against experienced players of all styles and equipment. George uses Long Pimples on his backhand and likes to stay close up to the table, force the opening and then use his forehand which has inverted rubber on. George won this competition in 2008 and has flitted between playing in the premier division and division 1. George plays in Jacobaeus B after dropping down from the A team to support the development of a young player at his club. George is second in the Division 2 averages with a win rate of 83.33%. Oliver was runner up in the 2015 Division 2 competition and has earned a spot this season playing in Division 1 with Riverside D. Oliver regularly represents our league in the Junior North West Table Tennis League and is having a very successful season currently averaging 82.05% win rate. George and Oliver have met twice in the league this season, Oliver won the first meeting 3:2 only for George to reverse that result also winning 3:2 just last week. Division 1 is typically made up of older players and younger players. Our older players typically used to play in higher divisions, or are returning to the sport after many years away or have attended our social sessions on a Friday where they played for fun and got a taste for the game and want to compete in league matches. Our younger players who are attending our coaching sessions and learning the sport are introduced to league play through our teams in this division so it's a good mix of ages, abilities and style.
