The game "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Lost Worlds" is a ROM hack of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive/Genesis. The main purpose of this fan-made version is to recreate and "complete" the levels that were planned but ultimately cut from the final version of the original game. During the development of Sonic 2, the Sega team had to remove some levels due to lack of time or unfinished work. These levels, such as the Dust Hill Zone, Wood Zone, and Hidden Palace Zone, became legendary among fans, who discovered them in prototypes and behind-the-scenes footage of the game. The hack's creator, ExecByte, sought to recapture these areas. To do so, he combined information from prototypes and concept art to build levels that attempt to capture the original spirit and design that Sega envisioned. It's as if players are getting the chance to experience a "lost" version of Sonic 2, with new zones, graphics, and even bosses. It's important not to confuse this ROM hack with Sega's official Sonic Lost World game, released in 2013 for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Although the names are similar and both refer to "lost" worlds, the ROM hack is an amateur fan-made project based on the 16-bit game, while Sonic Lost World is an official title in the franchise with a completely different story and gameplay.
