Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals! Following on from Parts 1 & 2 of the Valve Overdrive Tube Swap series, here is a (slightly unexpected!) Part 3. Phil from Effectrode saw the last video and has very kindly sent me a selection of NOS tubes to try in the V1 position of the TD-2A Tube Drive. So today, we're going to have a 9-way preamp tube shootout! The tubes we're going to be using are: 1) NOS Mullard 12AV7 2) NOS Electro Harmonix 12AY7 3) NOS GE Jan 5965 4) JJ 12AX7 (stock V1 tube for the TD-2A) 5) Unbranded Chinese 12AX7 (from a B.K. Butler Tube Driver) 6) EHX 12AX7 7) NOS GE 6060 8) NOS RCA 7058 9) NOS Mullard 12AX7 All the NOS tubes are probably from the 60s and 70s and the others are from the last 5 years or so. They all have different characteristics and gain levels which - as before - are most apparent running the pedal at low gain, but have subtle differences at high gain too. Approx. gain levels: Mullard AV7 (40mu); EHX AY7 (45mu); GE Jan 5965 (47mu). All others are 12AX7s - or variants of - and therefore should be 100mu or thereabouts. But without measuring them all individually it's hard to say exactly...they all vary a little, as you'll hear. More information about the different types of tubes (and tons more useful stuff!) can be found on the Effectrode website here: http://www.effectrode.com/signal-tube... What do you think? Which tube is your favourite? And why? Comment below! Guitar is a Fender Tele with Bare Knuckle Pickups through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone Combo (recorded with an sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon) and a Cornell Romany Plus (recorded with a 57) [email protected]
