Here it is, as promised! A pop culture nostalgia trip to the year 2006. 2006 was an incredibly eclectic year, especially for music. While rap, pop punk, and emo remained prominent, electro house and R&B were also quite popular. English singer Lily Allen released her debut album to much success, just as Amy Winehouse released her iconic “Rehab”. Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera’s solo careers continued strong, the latter releasing her retro-inspired “Back to Basics” album. Bands like My Chemical Romance, Keane, The All-American Rejects, and Three Days Grace were quite popular as well. In the world of film, Ben Stiller spent a Night at the Museum, just as the Fast and the Furious raced into Tokyo. Ethan Hunt embarked on a new mission in Mission: Impossible III, just as Captain Jack Sparrow returned in Dead Man’s Chest. Meryl Street starred in The Devil Wears Prada, just as Will Ferrell raced as Ricky Bobby. And V for Vendetta made sure we remembered the 5th of November. In the wake of the fifth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, two films chronicled the events of that tragic day. World Trade Center told the story of the first responders in New York, while United 93 chronicled the heroes who fought back against those who hijacked the eponymous flight. In the world of television, Tina Fey’s 30 Rock premiered to much fanfare, just as Ugly Betty was hired. America’s Got Talent hit the scene, just as Bleach premiered in the west. A number of shows aimed at preschoolers, including Wonder Pets, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse premiered. Heroes sought to save the cheerleader and save the world, while Miley Cyrus lived a double life as a regular kid and as pop sensation Hannah Montana. But by far the biggest hit that year was the Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical, which spawned a successful franchise and shifted Disney’s focus for the latter half of the 2000s. 2006 was one of the most important years for video games. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 hit its stride, with hits such as Gears of War, Dead Rising, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and many multiplatform titles that were best on the 360. The Nintendo DS also hit its stride with New Super Mario Bros., Elite Beat Agents, and Metroid Prime Hunters. Nintendo released its last major titles for its outgoing GameCube, Chibi-Robo! and Baten Kaitos Origins, just as Sony did the same for their PS2, including Kingdom Hearts II, Okami, and Final Fantasy XII. The seventh-generation of video games would soon be in full swing, with the release of Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii, which took the world by storm with it’s innovative motion controls as best showcased in the pack-in title Wii Sports, as well as the much anticipated Twilight Princess. The PS3, with its expensive $599 price tag, would take a bit longer to hit its stride. YouTube was rapidly growing, culminating in Google buying the website this year. Many internet memes were born, including the Evolution of Dance, Diet Coke and Mentos, and the Angry German Kid. The foul-mouthed Angry Video Game Nerd (then known as the Angry Nintendo Nerd) donned the glasses and pocket tee for the first time, becoming an inspiration for many gaming influencers. And lonelygirl15 began her infamous vlog. In the real world, Saddam Hussein was executed for his crimes against humanity, just as Pluto was demoted from its decades long planet status. Mel Gibson was pulled over for driving under the influence, resulting in his infamous anti-semitic rant. And sadly, we said goodbye to the crocodile hunter Steve Irwin. 2006 was quite the year to remember! So sit back, relax, and enjoy the pop culture nostalgia trip that is REMEMBER 2006!
