The history of Darjeeling tea dates back about 150 years to 1841, when British civil surgeon Dr. Campbell planted tea seeds near his residence in Beechwood, Darjeeling. In 1847, the government established tea estates in the area, and by 1866, there were 39 gardens producing 21,000 kilograms of tea. In 2004, Darjeeling tea became the first Indian product to receive a geographical indication tag (GI). Darjeeling tea has survived two world wars, colonial rule, the Indian freedom movement, landslides, drought, high monsoons, and the green revolution. Today, there are almost 80 tea estates in Darjeeling, producing some of the world's best-known teas. Darjeeling tea is often called the “Champagne of teas” and is one of the most expensive and coveted types to be grown in India.
